Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University (UAJY) and My Experience

My lovely campus!! I am proud to study here. And I am absolutely proud to be a graduate of this university. Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University or UAJY might not be as popular as 1-2 other big universities in Yogyakarta  such as Gadjah Mada University. But I am not here because I didn’t pass the tests from other universities. It’s my choice  to apply here from the beginning. We do have something else value-added here. Best graduates (which are mostly not based on GPA) from UAJY are known for their technology literacy, knowledge, competency, ethic, hardworking behavior, ability to adapt, and soft skills. If we, students, just want to explore more, there are many comparative advantages which can make us outstanding..

Well, I am from the Faculty of Economics. So I will write more about what I know. Just have a look at the facilities at FE UAJY and UAJY in common :

  1. All LCD and air-conditioned classrooms
  2. Superior computer laboratories, which are really conducive for our learning process
  3. Experienced and competent lecturers, at least Master’s graduates from local or oversea universities.
  4. Access to online journal databases : Ebsco, Proquest, etc
  5. (Mostly) Hi-tech lecturers
  6. Complete software availability, so that students can practice what they learn and simulate how it works in real life. Some are “rare” software you can hardly find at other universities in Indonesia.
  7. Banking facilities, which make it easier to settle academic fees.
  8. Computerized system : for class registration, library database, students record, etc.
  9. All hot spot area, and it’s 24 hours!!!
  10. Elevators
  11. Lots of choices for “Student Activity Unit” (”Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa/UKM” maksudnya…). From cultural, religious, to academic ones, students always have choice to develop their capacity optimally here.
  12. Well-furnished discussing areas/rooms
  13. English-based textbooks
  14. ATM machines, photocopy center, security center, banks, canteens, student areas, university park, all inside the campus!
  15. Great libraries : complete source of textbooks, journals, papers, cool magazines, newspapers, statistic reports, subscriptions, and so many more..
  16. Stock trading and simulation center (Pojok Bursa).
  17. Campus Ministry (sering dipelesetin oleh dosen n mahasiswa jadi “Campus Misteri”, hahaha..)
  18. Language Center (Pusat Bahasa…)
  19. Scholarships
  20. Green campus complex.  I really love the green feel and atmosphere at my campus.
  21. Others…… (Tell me more!)

UAJY give  students big capacity to grow and express. There are also cultural events, bazaars, seminars, gatherings, competitions, trainings, talk shows,  workshops, etc. Many of those are held by UKMs (students), but we get full support from the faculty. We are never lack of events. Just check the update the announcement boards! Sometimes there are guest lecturers or competent speakers form the related industry too who come to share with us.

The learning environment of UAJY also helps our personal and academic growth process. We have big lobbies for discussing, UKMs’ meetings, open stands; sitting areas in every corner and corridor, where students can chat, browse Internet, discuss, wait for lecturer, or anything.. up to you…; big auditoriums for any event,  cozy classrooms, and widespread information boards.

I’ve ever taken classes with following lecturers :

  1. Male lecturers : Pak Deddy, Pak Siswanto, Pak Felix, Pak Andreas Sukamto, Pak A.M. Soedjono, Pak Gunadi Brata, Pak Samiaji, Pak Totok, Pak Kunjana, Pak Bambang, Pak Sri Widodo, Pak Didit, Pak Kusumadmo, Pak Fandy Tjiptono, Pak Slamet. (not all are mentioned)
  2. Female lecturers : Bu Yanti, Bu Diah, Bu Endang, Bu Shellyana, Bu Sukma, Bu Rini, Bu M.D. Susilawati. (not all are mentioned)

Not many… I used to take the same lecturer for several classes, if I found them match with my learning style. Here are my favorites :

1. Mr Siswanto

I took his class three times : Operation Research, Business Forecasting, and Quality Management. What I remember about him : very smart, technology literate, and open-minded. He is also a good motivator with the spirit and values, serious but far from being formal and boring, and very cool. Pak Sis appreciates his students and always praises those who deserve. Love the learning process in his class. He usually gave “big” tasks every week, and we were to learn and explore the learning subject independently. We could use references from any sites, books, or other resources, as long as we were responsible for our statement. He showed us ways to references (information), but never place any limit to explore. “We are in the world of rapid, abundance, and free information, so just make optimal use of that!” I think he means it almost all the time.

He gave me capacity to know and explore my capabilities. There were open competitions in his class. He would check every group’s work in front of other groups (using LCD), so we always knew which groups were the best and worst. He usually put us in a small group of 2-3, ideal for me! Another special thing about Pak Sis : he always remembers students’ names. He even called our nicknames..!! Ohya, we could wear t-shirts and sandals to his class, or came as late as one hour, he wouldn’t care much. He didn’t even fill in the absence form. He tried to make us come by our own mind (heart), not by the administration rule of 75 % attendance.

Many said they were afraid to take his classes. And among the few who dared or forced to join, around 30-40% would give up and step back within first two weeks of class. His classes were never crowded.. Cool, isn’t him? Pak Sis does things in proper ethic. So do mostly of other lectures, I know. But he is the only one who inspires me about being ethical so deeply. Perhaps the first thing I learned was to state the reference when we refer or copy resources from others.  We often ignore such simple things, don’t we? But yes, it grows from simple to big things. That’s how we should learn in life. It’s about his way of transferring the feel, spirit, and responsibility. I will always love and respect a teacher like him.

2. Mr Fandy Tjiptono

I took his class once only, that is International Business. Unfortunately there was no more chance because I was in the 6th semester already. My  quick impression: smart, broad knowledge, very good English, great teaching style, funny, always has relevant examples, not boring. I like how he explained the materials, very understandable, sometimes with jokes. I also like how he tested his students. He just knew what simple questions to ask, that could represent our understanding about the topic or our “soft” knowledge. He occasionally demands for relevant examples. He made me feel like I want to read the book and understand the whole story.

3. Mr Kusumadmo.

I took his class twice : Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management. I think he is full of charisma and values, funny, deep knowledge, and strategic style of thinking. He is great at telling stories interestingly. He doesn’t like if you make noise during the class, moreover when he is speaking (I did this twice, sorry…..). I have to be frank that sometimes his class was boring. And there were few times when the air conditioner was too cold that it’s hard to concentrate..!! When someone stood up to remote the AC, or when he realized how freezing we were, he would simply say, “oh, so it is too cold for you?”

He often asked basic questions in the class, as Pak Fandy did to check our understanding. I somehow felt like we shared/focused on many same objects or kind of people. What he talked about, his answers to questions, his figures of interest, what got his attention, were more or less similar to mine. Most of the time, I was sure that I had the precise answers to his questions. And it was often right (I knew after he spoke it out or somebody else answered).  But  I was rarely active in the class, so he might not realize my potency, lol…!

Update (Mar, 22): I now get a link from Mr. Siswanto’s online classroom. I hope this lecturer remember me, lol! Anyway I read this on his page:

Welcome to Siswanto’s Class Room Online

dedicated for the future of   FE UAJY civilization
I like the part “Dedicated for the future of FE UAJY civilization” much. We, graduates, play big role in this too. As what I tell friends all the time, don’t be low profile when it comes to showing off your qualifications. Show people what you can do excellently and take the chances. Keep learning, keep exploring, and be optimal for whatever your choice is!

What a very nice post Yasinta :)

    Hi… .
Namaku Ade.

Yasinta, glad to hear that Mr. Siswanto is one of your fave lecturer, because unfortunately he’s mine too….dengan beberapa alasan :

Sir…, to be honest, you got me crazy at those time! This is the most important reason why he does become my fave.

Personaly, aku seneng banget waktu nemu blog ini karena ya seperti aq bilang tadi, it brings back memories when I was student.

Thanks komennya yg panjang. Seneng ada alumni yg baca ini, hehe.. I am also a proud graduate of FE UAJY! I was so much into Operational Management too, although I finally chose Financial Management for thesis. And you know the lecturer.. he is perhaps killer or freaky for many. But we know his quality. All his classes I had taken are among the most memorable ones to me. Sukses selalu…!
